Position: Application Server Developer

Location: Stockport, Cheshire

Salary: £22,000 To £28,000 Depending on Experience

CDL is a leading independent software house supplying systems to the insurance industry.currently looking for an experienced Java solutions developer to join a specialist team working on the development of our next generation software. Responsible for developing application server programs and ensuring they integrate effectively with other architectural layers, you will work with a variety of modules, components, databases, client access channels and platforms including MS-Windows and Unix variants. The ideal candidate will have demonstrational practical knowledge of Web Service protocols, will possess strong communication skills and will seek to encourage and develop colleagues.

Main Purpose of Job

To develop, maintain, & support application server based programs. This may incorporate a variety of applications, modules, components, databases, integration with different client access channels (Windows, web, cti, diTV), platforms including MS-Windows & UNIX variants.

Scope of Job

Programming – to develop, maintain and support application server programs & ensure they integrate effectively between other architectural layers. Primary focus will be Application Server Development, a different secondary focus may be agreed with the Application Server Development Team Leader

Testing & Quality Assurance - to ensure program functionality /application integration meets customer expectations and company quality standards

Conceptualisation & Technical Design – contribute to the overall technical architecture of an application server development solution

Communication – ensure a good level of teamwork, highlighting issues in good time and proactively suggesting solutions to resolve problems

Support – Assist with resolution of technical problems

Work Organisation – effective prioritisation and meeting deadlines

Individual Development – take ownership for personal development

Technical / Commercial Knowledge – maintain knowledge of current development tools CDL applications, programming standards and company issues.

Essential Skills and experience

JAVA Development experience within in a commercial environment

Practical knowledge of Web Service protocols such as WSDL, XML, XSD, XSLT, XPATH and JAXB

Relational database experience ideally Oracle or DB2

Knowledge of UML within a multi-tier architecture

Strong knowledge of deployment and configuration of a leading Application Server such as IBM Websphere, BEA Weblogic

Commercial programming of Integration technologies such as Java API’s / XML / SOAP / JMS / JDBC / JNDI

Practical experience using tools such as Eclipse, Ant, J4Log and JUnit

Proactive and creative mind to enhance the development and operational environment

Strong desire for high levels of quality and responsive to business needs

Strong evidence of desire to keep abreast of emerging technologies

Desirable Skills and experience

Apache web services Axis

Practical J2EE Application Deployment knowledge

Insurance knowledge

J2EE integration to Microsoft COM / .NET

Experience of working in a dynamic software house environment on full development life cycle projects

Unix / Linux experience

Qualifications

Minimum HND, preferably degree in a relevant subject

Relevant specialist programming skills and knowledge of object oriented programming methodologies gained through formal training
